The Real Story Behind David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown’s Friendship

They’ve shared a screen for a decade. Eleven and Hopper. The girl with powers and the small town police chief who becomes her reluctant father. Their real relationship off set has always been harder to define, and in 2025, it got far more complicated.

How It Started

Millie Bobby Brown was 11 years old when she started filming Stranger Things in Atlanta in September 2015. David Harbour was 40. Their characters end up as adoptive father and daughter, and the dynamic bled off screen earlier than either of them probably expected.

In a 2020 interview with People, Harbour said he initially tried to stay serious and in character around the younger cast to get better performances from them. “I wanted to preserve a lot of the character of Hopper off-screen for these kids because I wanted their performances to be as rich as possible,” he told the outlet. That approach didn’t last. By his own admission, the wall came down as seasons went on. He told the That Scene With Dan Patrick podcast in 2021 that he had “always felt this kind of deep fatherly affection” for Brown, and that he knew her before the show made her famous. That protective feeling extended to her dating life. Brown once said Harbour’s reaction to hearing about a new boyfriend was simply: “Another boy?” aolaol

Ten Years of Raw and Real

The relationship was never conflict-free, and both have been open about that. At PaleyFest in Los Angeles in 2018, a 14-year-old Brown described their working dynamic as intense, saying their scenes together were “raw and real” and that the emotional friction between them actually improved the work. Before Season 5, she told Empire that Harbour always kept an eye on her while she pestered him the way a younger sibling would, climbing all over him until he gave up and laughed. The Tab

Ten years is a long time. Brown turned 21 in February 2024. She went from an unknown kid in Atlanta to one of the most recognizable faces in the world, with two Enola Holmes films and a marriage to musician Jake Bongiovi behind her by the time Season 5 filming started. That kind of growth inside a working relationship is rarely uncomplicated.

The Complaint

In November 2025, The Daily Mail reported that Brown had formally filed a harassment and bullying complaint against Harbour before Season 5 filming began in January 2024. According to an anonymous source cited in the report, “there were pages and pages of accusations” and the investigation that followed “went on for months.” Brown reportedly had a personal representative on set throughout filming, which wrapped in December 2024. The Daily Mail specified the claims were not thought to involve sexual misconduct. Neither Brown, Harbour, nor Netflix addressed the specifics publicly. TcnjsignalnewsThe Daily Beast

The report also arrived at the same time as public accusations by Harbour’s estranged wife, singer Lily Allen, who addressed his alleged infidelity through her new album, West End Girl. The two situations are reportedly separate. Both landed in the same news cycle regardless, going into the show’s final season. Cinemablend

The Premiere

Six days after The Daily Mail published its report, Brown and Harbour arrived together at the Season 5 premiere in Los Angeles on November 6, 2025. Netflix posted footage of the pair cracking up for the cameras before the show’s launch. They hugged. Brown pretended to sign Harbour’s head with a marker. Speaking to Deadline after filming wrapped, Brown said: “Of course I felt safe. We’ve worked together for 10 years. I feel safe with everyone on that set.” She added that playing father and daughter naturally builds a closer bond, especially after the intensity of their shared scenes in Season 2. Harbour, speaking to Entertainment Weekly at the premiere, said he adores her and is proud of her. Ross Duffer, when asked about the on-set reports, told The Hollywood Reporter that the cast had been doing this for ten years and “at this point they’re family.” NMEaol

Weeks later, The Hollywood Reporter pressed Brown further on the united front. “We’ve been doing that for the last 10 years,” she said. “We love this show with everything, and we value our friendship more than anything.” The Hollywood Reporter

What’s Actually Known

The full picture is still not public. Two people met when one of them was a child, built a working relationship through her entire adolescence, and landed on the other side of a formal complaint that neither will discuss in detail. They still showed up at that premiere. She still calls him her TV dad. He still says he adores her.

Whether that’s a repaired friendship, a professional front, or something more complicated, only they know. The final season of Stranger Things is streaming now on Netflix.
